U mobilization and associated U isotope fractionation by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria

چکیده

Uranium (U) contamination of the environment causes high risk to health, demanding for effective and sustainable remediation. Bioremediation via microbial reduction soluble U(VI) is generating fractions (>50%) insoluble non-crystalline U(IV) which, however, might be remobilized by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. In this study, efficacy Acidithiobacillus (At.) ferrooxidans Thiobacillus (T.) denitrificans mobilize associated U isotope fractionation were investigated. At. mobilized between 74 91% after 1 week, mobilization was observed both, living inactive cells. Contrary previous observations, no T. could observed. did not cause suggesting that ratio determination unsuitable as a direct proxy bacterial remobilization. The similar capability active cells suggests based on reaction with cell biomass. This study raises doubts about long-term sustainability in-situ bioremediation measures at U-contaminated sites, especially regard being main component bioremediation.

Iron isotope fractionation by Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophic bacteria

Photoautotrophic bacteria that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe[II]) under anaerobic conditions are thought to be ancient in origin, and the ferric (hydr)oxide mineral products of their metabolism are likely to be preserved in ancient rocks. Here, two enrichment cultures of Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophs and a culture of the genus Thiodictyon were studied with respect to their ability to fractionate ...

Variable carbon isotope fractionation expressed by aerobic CH4-oxidizing bacteria

Carbon isotope fractionation factors reported for aerobic bacterial oxidation of CH4 ðaCH4–CO2Þ range from 1.003 to 1.039. In a series of experiments designed to monitor changes in the carbon isotopic fractionation of CH4 by Type I and Type II methanotrophic bacteria, we found that the magnitude of fractionation was largely due to the first oxidation step catalyzed by methane monooxygenase (MMO...

Natural fractionation of 238 U / 235 U

The isotopic composition of U in nature is generally assumed to be invariant. Here, we report variations of the U/U isotope ratio in natural samples (basalts, granites, seawater, corals, black shales, suboxic sediments, ferromanganese crusts/ nodules and BIFs) of 1.3‰, exceeding by far the analytical precision of our method ( 0.06‰, 2SD). U isotopes were analyzed with MC-ICP-MS using a mixed U–...

Questions regarding Precambrian sulfur isotope fractionation.

The discovery by Farquhar et al. (1) of mass-independent isotope fractionation of S and S in rocks formed more than ;2 billion years ago (Ga), but not in younger rocks, has boosted the theory postulating a dramatic change from an anoxic to an oxygen-rich atmosphere about 2 Ga. That is because the only known natural process that may cause mass-independent fractionation of both S and S involves a...

Mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation during photochemistry of sulfur dioxide

Mass-independent sulfur isotope signatures are observed in Archean and early Paleoproterozoic sedimentary sulfate and sulfide minerals, and provide the most robust constraints on early atmospheric oxygen levels. Smaller mass-independent sulfur isotope anomalies are observed in ice cores and interpreted as a tracer of stratospheric volcanic loading. Photochemistry of sulfur dioxide (SO 2) has be...
